ACS Lunch & Learn | Be a Changemaker – Food for Thought: Nourishment or Offense? (November 9, 2022)

Food for Thought: Nourishment or Offense? How to Make More Sound Decisions While Feeding Ourselves?

The question of what to have for dinner has become increasingly more complex as the landscape for our food, how its grown, produced, raised, caught is a seeming moral minefield. Whether it be the carbon footprint in our farming methods, the chemicals from pesticides and antibiotics that the global agriculture industry deploys and subsequently runs into our soil and waterways, to the extreme animal cruelty exhibited in intensive farms and the plastic pollution that comes with the fishing industry, every decision we make to feed ourselves is ridden with ethical issues. On the other hand, the waste created by the food chain ecosystem to support our diet also comes with gargantuan quantities of waste. Globally, about a third of all food produced goes to landfill.

This issue cannot be more pronounced than it is here in Hong Kong. With local culture centered around meals and a very high ratio of food and beverage establishments to population, we throw out thousands of tons of food daily into our landfills and yet one in five people in this city struggle with food security issues.

Jennifer Cheung, the Founder of Sift Patisserie and now an ACS Volunteer Consultant will be shining a light on a few of the changemakers in this food chain sustainability space. The panel discussion will feature:

– Gary Stokes from OceansAsia

– Chunling Fong from Farmhouse Productions

– Heidi Spurrell from Food Made Good

– Robin Hwang from FoodLink Foundation

Moderated by Jennifer, we will learn more about the good they do, the challenging gaps they try to bridge and how we can all make more sustainable decisions while nourishing ourselves and what we, as volunteers can do to help and become changemakers ourselves.

Date: 9th November 2022

Time: 12:30 – 1:30pm

Venue: via Zoom
