An Interview with ACS Volunteer Yvonne Mok

Welcome to another “face of ACS”, an interview series starring ACS Volunteers and their journey in serving the non-profit community.

Yvonne was an accountant and turned into a financial regulator. She is now retired but still expects 100% integrity and accountability.

What 3 words would your friends use to describe you?

Genuine, determined, fun-loving

What has your ACS volunteering journey been like? What particular instances which have stood out for you (and why)?

I joined ACS in early 2022 for a selfish reason – I wanted to find an NGO with a cause dear to my heart which runs an operation that I completely get and buy, for myself to donate.

I have since volunteered as a facilitator in various programs and come to realize that I am not a typical volunteer as I do not have the same skills or mindset. With time I learned to embrace my diversity – when I salute the sheer genius and professionalism of many of my fellow volunteers (especially
as witnessed in the recent PIVOT training and Col-Lab), I can still add some value just by being me and seeing things through the eyes of a donor.
Oftentimes the NGOs are extremely passionate and do a great deal of good work. Yet they cannot articulate their vision, mission, achievements or deliverables. I am hopeful that my line of questioning will better equip them for their future fundraising efforts. Sometimes you just have to be cruel in order to be kind  🤓

What advice do you have for a new ACS volunteer?

Do not mind giving up your free time. It will be time well spent because believe me, you will find it truly inspiring and rewarding to work with brilliant volunteers from diverse backgrounds and great NGOs.

Thank you Yvonne!
